Lwethu’s Unabridged Birth Certificate
Please be in prayer that Lwethu’s unabridged birth certificate (UBC) is issued and received ontime. The South African government has recently introduced the new law pertaining to overseas travelling arrangements for children. An UBC is required for children when travelling overseas. Previously, the abridged certificate sufficed but not anymore. As soon as we became aware of this change, we lodged an application at the end of March. When we followed up with Dept. Of Home Affairs this week, they couldn’t help us because the writing on the receipt has faded-out. On the receipt, was a reference number they needed to track the status of the reprint. We have looked at the various, possibly quickest options to get the UBC, but the waiting period is the big factor here. It takes anything from 4-8 weeks. On their advice, we reapplied this morning with special instructions ‘URGENT’ which they think will speed-up the processing time. If this fails, we have to make a trip to Johannesburg where the original (abridged) birth certificate was issued. The waiting period there is much shorter. They say one could get it back within a week. So the plan is, if it’s not back by 12 June, we’ll have to make the trip in order to get it back before we travel to America on 27 June. We’d greatly appreciate your prayers.
